Log Cabin Living

It's been 10 years since my wife and I built our log house. We love our home and here are my top 5 advantages of living in the home of record:
# 1. Unique Design
A wooden house stands out from the traditional architecture. There is a wild beauty of a wooden house calls only attention and interest of those driving by. We live in a small town in northern Canada and every summer it is easy to spot tourists. They are the ones that lead to our house very slowly, or we realize you have driven for two or three times in the last five minutes. The huge continuous records with no visible joints, along with massive roof lines of our house has only one way to draw attention to. This is a totally unique design house that stands in our community.
# 2. The Dynamic Great Hall
The mark of a well-designed wooden house is the Great Room. Is the center of activity, the station Grand Central so to speak. Dominating most of the houses square feet and with a large dome and open 22-foot high cathedral ceiling, the Great Hall invites all to gather and enjoy each other's company. With good planning seating and rest areas, not uncomfortable at all, to have twenty or twenty people the Great Hall for a party or a movie. With the ability to accommodate so many people to ease the Great Room becomes a natural space to relax and just enjoy yourself, even among a house full of guests.
# 3. Winter Comfort
There's nothing quite like the heat and the comfort of the rustic decor inside a home heated by wood fire crackling of a wood stove. It is nostalgic and charming ... it just feels right. Nestled on the couch by the fire with your favorite novel and steaming cappuccino in hand, while the howling winds from the north and the snow falls outside ... Is there anything else welcoming? Replace the novel with the love of his life and yes, just got more comfortable!
# 4. Interaction
Design a wooden house should be planned and designed for optimal interaction. The placement of the kitchen next to the Grand Chamber is the key. This allows the facility to communicate from one room to another. In fact, you do not even recognize the limits of the "rooms" per se. They flow as one, while offering all aspects individual practice is expected. My wife can bake or cook, or do whatever, in the kitchen but can interact in a visible and audible to myself, or whoever, in the big room without raising his voice to be heard, or feeling "alienated" from a conversation that may be occurring. The aspect of interaction is a great addition that comes with living log home.
# 5. Decorate Christmas
A wooden house and Christmas decoration are, of course, each other. Last year, my wife was 48 beautifully decorated Christmas trees placed strategically throughout the house! It was absolutely impressive. Winter wonderland indeed! Rest in that environment, feeling the warm glow and embrace of the wood stove, while the angelic voice of Celine Dion singing "O Holy Night" flows through home stereo speakers in the background ... Now it is Christmas log home living at its best! The only drawback was that it could not having the TV, stereo and lights a large space while the Christmas tree lights were because it would trigger the switch. But that was easy to handle ... and trust me, the vision of the 48 trees illuminated with all the trimmings, surrounded by massive log walls of the Grand Chamber, it was worth the inconvenience sensitive.
If you have ever had the need to build a wooden house, I say go ahead and give it. We did and never regretted one iota.

See Reviews For This Product DescriptionLog houses inspire fascination across most of North America. They evoke a simpler time - a tradition of independence and self-sufficiency missing in today's high-tech world. But a log house does not have to be a fantasy. Ownership is within the means of almost anyone reasonably handy with tools. Allan Mackie believes - and demonstrates - that attitude is at least as important as carpentry skills. Given a will to learn and a desire to make something of one's own, the average person is more than capable of building a log house that will serve an individual, a couple or a family for years to come. In this profusely illustrated book, the author takes the reader step-by-step through the building process - the selection of land, the purchase and preparation of the logs, the sharpening of tools and the cutting, lifting and fitting of logs, and all the other steps involved. With hundreds of photographs and detailed diagrams and drawings, The Owner-Built Log House is much more than a how-to guide. It is nothing less than a testament to the belief that where there is a will for self-reliance, there is the possibility of achieving it. As a unique feature of the book, the author takes us through his current building project on a 100-acre wilderness site. The reader experiences the entire process - from buying land right up to moving in and spending that first winter. Chapters include: - Purpose in Building a Log House - The Building Tree - Making a Set of Plans - How Long Will It Take and How Much Will It Cost - Good Site, Good Tools, Good Work - Log Walls - Notches of All Kinds - A Roof Over Your Head - Windows, Doors and Stairs - Interior and Finishing Touches.
