Description

Casa San Ysidro, a restored hacienda in Corrales, New Mexico, is world famous as the home of the remarkable collection of early New Mexico furniture assembled by Ward Alan Minge and his wife, Shirley, along with their equally extensive collection of farm and domestic tools and equipment. Now owned by The Albuquerque Museum, these items have long served scholars and students as an invaluable source of information on life in colonial New Mexico. Today access to the collection is limited to small groups, but this book will be welcomed as the first published record of some of the Minge furniture collection. Photographs and dimensioned drawings of thirty-six of the collection's finest examples of early colonial carpintero craftsmanship along with drawings of fifteen authentic design details will help artisans re-create these classic pieces. Anyone interested in New Mexico furniture design and its evolution will find this book valuable both as a reference tool and as an aid to making furniture whose design and proportions will be true to the originals.

Description

For more than forty years Dr Ward Alan Minge and his wife Shirley combed the antique and used furniture stores throughout New Mexico to amass one of the most remarkable private collections of early New Mexico furniture ever assembled. Along with an extensive collection of farm and domestic tools and equipment, it was housed in Casa San Ysidro, the colonial rancho they lovingly restored in Corrales, New Mexico, and for years served scholars and students as a font of information regarding life in colonial New Mexico. In 1997 the home and collection were turned over to the Albuquerque Museum, and in the future both will be open only to small groups on a limited access basis. Here, for the first time, are photographs and dimensioned drawings of thirty-six of the collection's finest examples of early colonial carpintero craftsmanship along with drawings of fifteen authentic design details to help artisans faithfully recreate these classic pieces. This book will be a welcome addition for anyone interested in the evolution of New Mexico furniture design, and particularly for furniture makers anxious to create a timeless heirloom whose design and proportions will be true to the original.

Description

The motifs in this series all combine delightful traditional patterns with distinctive colour and are based on authentic historical and regional sources. The concept behind the designs is a simple trace-down approach - motifs are transferred from the printed paper patterns onto any painted surface by means of re-usable transfer paper, then coloured in following step-by-step instructions, covering everything from colour mixing to painting in traced patterns. Each booklet contains, as well as a central motif, related motifs for borders, corner pieces and small details, creating an array of decorative possibilities. Colour photographs illustrate the wide range of decorative objects, from kitchen cupboards to soap boxes, on which the motifs can be used. The "Simply Mexican" patterns have a bold, contemporary look, combining the brilliant colours and chalky textures beloved of Mexican folk art with strong, primitive motifs drawn from the ancient Aztec and Mayan cultures.
