World prices for sawlogs jumped almost 8% in the 3Q/09 due to improved wood markets in the U.S. and Europe, quarterly reports resources timber

Seattle, USA. The world price of sawlogs began to move up in the fall after touching background in many markets earlier this year. The recent surge has been the result of a tighter supply of registration, but also because operating rates improved in many sawmills in the U.S. and Europe. The U.S., the Nordic countries, Central Europe, the Baltic States and Russia have experienced the biggest price increases (In local currencies) over the past six months.

The Global sawlog Price Index (GSPI), which is based on the prices of logs sawn softwood in 19 key regions of the world was U.S. $ 73.30/m3 in Q3, 7.6% from the previous quarter, as reported by the resource Quarterly timber. Much of the increase was because the U.S. dollar weakened against most currencies in the region WRQ, but there was also increased log prices in Europe in local currencies. Despite the recent increase in GSPI Index is still 15% lower than a year ago and 20.3% below that of all time-high in the 4Q/07.

The biggest declines in prices of registration (in U.S. dollars) from the peak in early 2008, have been produced in the United Baltic, Nordic countries and in western North America. In these regions, prices are now more than 25% below their highs. prices logs in the southern U.S., Central Europe, Latin America and Oceania have fallen relatively less and currently 5-10% below its peak about 18 months ago.

Log prices have probably come to an end in this cycle last spring and is expected to continue the recent spike in 2010 due to the increasing demand for wood in the U.S. Europe, Asia and Latin America. So far this year, Europe, North Africa and China have been among the fastest growing markets for exporters Wood and this trend will probably continue in the coming year.

There are also some good news coming out of Russia. timber exports increased slightly in 2009 compared to 2008 and could reach the third highest level in history. This is primarily due to the high demand for timber China. Softwood lumber shipments to China were up nearly 60% this year. The export market has benefited from strong wood mills mainly in Siberia and Russian Far East.

Reporting global timber market is included in the 50-page publication Wood Resource Quarterly. The report, established in 1988 and with readers in over 25 countries, tracks sawlogs, pulpwood, wood and prices pellet in key regions throughout the world and also includes regular updates of the latest developments in international timber, pulp, lumber and markets biomass.
