Planning Your Log Home

Your log home is one place that you will always find very interesting. It is the typical rural western home. Many people have traveled into the country to view log homes for pleasure sake. The house takes on a different meaning when it comes to those of country homes. Though cheaper to construct, a log home must be approached with great car so that you derive the best value. The least structural error or design flaw in the log home can cost a lot of money in the future. For example, leakages will lead to rot and the eventual destruction of the home.

There are essential questions that you must ask yourself if you want to build a log home. First, where do you want to build it? How big do you want it to be? What fittings do you put in? The answers to these questions will determine how your construction will go.

The acquisition of the land and all its rights is very important. You would want to do a due diligence on the land so you know the true owner. Again you would not want to buy a land that has so many liens against it. Particularly pay attention to ingress and egress issues. If there are any easements to be made, make sure that these are well sorted out. Then you must find out with the local authorities if the type of house you want to construct is permitted.

One major consideration will be land. How are you going to get it? Are you going to buy a previously owned log home and demolish it to get the land to build what you like? Or you are going to get fresh land? Are you going to bud a log home inside a ranch or you are siting it somewhere else?

You will have to think about furnishing too. How do you want the place to be designed? Are you going to have a rustic interior look or a modern plush look? Think of the availability of the material you want to use in the home. Can they be easily obtained from the area? Will they have to be brought from else where? What will be the exact cost in bringing them from afar?

The wood used in the log home should be properly cured and sealed so that they do not discolor in the future. Discolored log homes do not look appealing and it can lead to wood rot in the future.

Each log home must have an overlapping roof. This is to ensure that rain does not splash against the foundation beams. The rain should drop off the roof away from the walls of the log home. You should take care to properly construct rain gutters so that you can be able to harvest rain. You can place barrels as receptacles so that you ca collect all the falling rain.

Again, you should be careful in the landscaping of your home. There should be no gullies around the house else the building will become raised and then eventually collapse or tilt. Divert all sources of run off water away from the foundation of the building. Again, ensure that flooding is reduced as much as possible within the site of the home.

Molds can damage your log home easily because it is made of wood. Try to clean them as they form. You should also inspect the property for wood rot or any other similar condition.

For your cabin home to maintain its rustic look and beauty, you will have to pay a lot of attention to it. Unlike conventional homes made of concrete, the log home is primarily wood which is easily affected by the weather and other conditions. You would therefore take utmost care to look after your home so that it looks appealing to guests who will be lodging there. As an owner you will also derive much pleasure from seeing your property sparkle with newness.

Description

Over 100,000 sold! Now newly revised and up to date, with over 2,000 color photographs and illustrations.

"Voluntary simplicity" has become a catch phrase for what seems to be a yearning for a simpler, more self-sufficient and economical way of living in the late 20th century. This book, first published in 1981 and recently updated, was probably many folks' first in-depth exposure to the idea of a simpler life, making things by hand, and enjoying a stronger sense of control over personal budgets, home projects, and lifestyles. Hundreds of projects are listed, illustrated in step-by-step diagrams and instructions: growing and preserving your own food, converting trees to lumber and building a home from it, traditional crafts and homesteading skills, and having fun with recreational activities like camping, fishing, and folk dancing without spending a lot of money. This book will have you dreaming and planning from the first page! -- Mark A. Hetts
