What to know about log cabin kits comes down to understanding how easy these relatively inexpensive kits are to assemble and also how attractive they are once they've been fully put together. For someone who has always wanted a rustic log cabin but who hasn't had the money for a full-out version, one of these kits can be a great solution.

Nowadays, one of these kits can also be extremely easy to put together and is also functional in ways that were not contemplated in the past. Some kits can be used for many more reasons than just as a lodge or sleepover cabin, in fact. Additionally, they can range in size all the way up to some truly large versions, if that's what's really needed.

What all this means is that any standard size cabin can be added to and even made into a variety of different shapes, including classic 'L' and 'H' shapes. Every cabin kit of good quality comes ready for at least three seasons and some are even four seasons-capable. Normally, these kits come with panels that are different on the outside and inside. For example, interior sides will usually be made of or covered over by knotty pine with exterior sides made up of a solid wooden panel that has been cut so that it looks like a series a round logs. Small cabin sizes can also be put together with only a ladder, a screw gun, a level, a hammer and a chalk line. Usually, 2 to 3 people will be needed in order to assemble the cabin and it can generally be erected and ready to go in about a day. This is for a 12' x 12' cabin, with larger cabins or cabins that are shaped differently taking a bit longer.

Prices for one of these cabins -- before adding a shingle the roof, for example -- come in at under $4300 for a 12' x 12' get. A 12' x 32' log cabin kit can be had for less than $7200. Throw in a couple thousand dollars more for some niceties and you can still have a very nice three season or four season lodge for well under $10,000.
