What’s the Best Option, a Log Cabin or Shed?

Log cabin or shed? Shed or log cabin? Do you need a garden building, but you can’t decide which one to go for? By the end of this article, the information provided should help you make a decision.

First of all, why do you need a garden building? If it is just for storing a variety of items that can’t find a place in the home, a shed would be the better option because they can be small and relatively inexpensive. A corner shed can be tucked away in the garden and hold all manner of objects, or there are sheds that are purposely built just for storing tools, and sheds for bicycles. For bigger storage items, such as: a ride-on lawn mower, a motorbike or a quad bike, a large garden shed can house your items.

Do you want a garden building to be used for a hobby? If so, what hobby are you pursuing? For gardening, there are purpose built gardening sheds that contain work surfaces and has skylights, as well as windows: to increase natural illumination to benefit the plants and provide ventilation. A potting shed is ideal for the serious gardener as it has large windows; so the shed can double up as part-greenhouse. This feature is especially popular for gardeners who do not have room for a greenhouse and a shed in their garden. A shed is also ideal to convert into a hobby area if they are sedentary, such as: crafts, writing and collections. But if your hobby is fitness and you want to install a treadmill and other exercise equipment, a log cabin would be the better option because it is sturdier.

Do you want a garden building to act as an attractive feature for your garden and to entertain in? Than a log cabin could be what you need. Log cabins come with a variety of attractive features, such as, verandas, window boxes, and single or double doors. An outdoor cooking area could be located near the log cabin, and the inside furnished with comfy chairs, a bar, curtains and cupboards, etc.

Do you need extra space to house an office or a playroom? A log cabin or a large shed can be easily transformed into an office or a playroom, and there are companies that specialise in this. What you opt for will often depend on your budget; log cabins can start from £1500 and large sheds can start from £1000.

What if you need an extra room for guests to stay in or you need a ‘granny-annexe’? Log cabins are ideal for creating that extra living space. They can be insulated, fitted with a heating system, electrical and water outlets and made to feel really homely. Family members will be queuing to move in!

Do you want a garden building without maintenance? Both log cabins and wooden sheds require some degree of annual maintenance, such as: applying a wood finish to prevent the wood from decaying and to protect the wood from insects. Thus a good choice would be a garden shed made from heavy moulded plastics, such as: PVC and polyethylene because they hardly need any maintenance.

After reading this article you should have a clearer idea of whether you need a log cabin or a shed. There are many types and shapes of log cabins and sheds available that will suit your budget. What ever option you decide on, you’ll be spending your money wisely when you invest in a good quality log cabin or shed, because the British Institute of Surveyors said, a garden building can add about 5% to the value of a property.

Description

The only step-by-step guide to building log cabins and log furniture—Pioneer style There are other manuals on building cabins, but W. Ben Hunt's is the only one to show you how to build and furnish an authentic pioneer cabin-the easy, natural way, using only hand tools and the woods around you. Our ancestors used logs and hand tools to build durable, dry, windproof, and protective dwellings; and they fashioned chairs, tables, branches, and bushes. In this day of power saws, lumberyards, and high prices, it's good to know that you can build in the same way. How to Build a Log Cabin Part One provides complete directions for building cabins of three sizes: one-room, one-room and lean-to, and three-room. Just follow the clear instructions on every step of construction from choosing the site, clearing the tract, and building the foundation to installing fixtures, heating, and lighting. How to Furnish a Log Cabin If you're not ready to build an entire cabin, you can try your hand at some of the small furnishings such as lamps, fences, and candlesticks. Part Two tells all you need to know to build and finish rustic furniture for an entire home: benches, tables, chairs, beds, cots, shelves, candelabras, gates, arbors, wayside stands, even road signs and birdhouses. "Two Books in One" There are really two books in one here: Building a Log Cabin, published in 1947, and Rustic Construction, published in 1939. These two classics have been reproduced exactly as they first appeared, with the drawings and photographs that W. Ben Hunt selected and produced for the original editions.

Description

• Rich, warm, relaxed, natural—Adirondack camps, Western lodges, much more • Glowing photos of dozens of unique rustic homes from across North America • Spotlights craftspeople and creative forces in construction and décor • Great idea book for anyone looking to design or decorate a primary or second home Used to be that "rustic" meant a dusty, dumpy cabin in the woods. No more! Rustic Revisited reveals today's rustic—contemporary design that celebrates the honesty of all-natural, local materials such as wood, twig, stone, and bark. Rustic structures often have the same finish on the exterior and the interior—for example, rough-hewn timber on both the outside and inside. The homes in Rustic Revisitedembrace the hand-crafted philosophy of rustic and show how to take that philosophy to new heights in a variety of styles, from the Adirondack camp to the Western lodge to the classic log cabin. Thirty unique homes, most planned by architects or interior designers, are showcased here, each lavishly photographed to allow readers exclusive access to interiors, exteriors, and noteworthy details in unusual rustic houses from New York to California, from Montana to Ontario, from North Carolina to Minnesota. These homes cover the full spectrum of rustic—renovations and new construction, traditional and cutting edge. A bonus chapter on decoration spotlights the craftspeople who are the creative forces of the movement.
