Bear Attack

She talked about it, she dreamed of him, never let him go. This was how a friend of mine believes his fear of meeting a bear when hiking in wilderness areas of Idaho. His character is strong in all others. She is friendly, hardworking, intelligent, prosperous and loving. But when the word "bear" crosses her ears, she turns to jelly. In other words, his life is something A-Bear-Able!

We were walking last spring in the mountains of Coeur d'Alene going for a 10-mile trip to visit one of the beautiful alpine lakes are abundant throughout this part of Idaho. We have prepared a meal, he threw the backpack and set off for a glorious day of exercise and being one with nature. My friend, however, was nervous and had a aerosol can of bear (pepper spray as only for the bears) with her case. I assured him that the bears were harmless in this area. Only the black bear roamed the woods here ... There are no grizzly bears, he said. However, she was exposed to believe that a bear was a bear and in his mind, were all very, very bad.

After about an hour of brisk walking for one minute we sat down for a drink of our water and enjoy the natural beauty around us. SNAP! was a branch of a tree just above track and there was ... everything you ever imagined in their worst nightmares in front of her. It was, you guessed it, a big black bear 10 feet grunt grunt! In Actually, this is how she recalls. It was actually a small black bear woman just crossing the road about 50 yards ahead of us. My good friend shouted, grabbed a hold of me and began to tremble. I joined in the shouting because the first thing you do when you encounter a bear is making loud noises to scare. So I thought, what the heck, I might scream too to make her feel better.

Well, the bear scurried away, my friend almost fainted and laughed until I cried. I gave a few minutes for your heart to decrease from the 160 beats per minute and then calmly and softly said: "You see, the bears will not to do harm. "She calmly said," We are lucky this time, buster. "Well, it goes without saying that this experience did not help his fear of bears, but only increased the intensity of their phobia.

Still walks together and now my friend alone in the wilderness like never before. No, she did not overcome his terror end bears. No, his dreams have not stopped. No, she has not made peace with this beautiful animal. When we returned to the homes of our city after the latest hike kind care my sweet dear friend immediately called a shooting gallery, enrolled in a class to learn to shoot a gun, and now carries a pistol at his side every time roam the hills and valleys of Bear country (just in case, she says). My friend feels less nervous and seems to enjoy our trips like never before. I'm sorry for the poor bear.

Laura Ingalls's story begins in 1871 in a little log cabin on the edge of the Big Woods of Wisconsin. Four-year-old Laura lives in the little house with her Pa, her Ma, her sisters Mary and Carrie, and their trusty dog, Jack.Pioneer life is sometimes hard, since the family must grow or catch all their own food as they get ready for the cold winter. But it is also exciting as Laura and her folks celebrate Christmas with homemade toys and treats, do the spring planting, bring in the harvest, and make their first trip into town. And every night they are safe and warm in their little house, with the happy sound of Pa's fiddle sending Laura and her sisters off to sleep. And so begins Laura Ingalls Wilder's beloved story of a pioneer girl and her family. The nine Little House books have been cherished by generations of readers as both a unique glimpse into America's frontier past and a heartwarming, unforgettable story. Although the Little House stories are traditionally seen as "girl" books, boys might be happily surprised if they take another peek at their sisters' shelves. Little House in the Big Woods--the first book of the series and Laura Ingalls Wilder's first children's book--is full of the thrills, chills, and spills typically associated with "boy" books. Any boy or girl who has fantasized about running off to live in the woods will find ample information in these pages to manage a Wisconsin snowstorm, a panther attack, or a wild sled ride with a pig as an uninvited guest. Every chapter divulges fascinatingly intricate, yet easy-to-read, details about pioneer life in the Midwest in the late 1800s, from bear-meat curing to maple-tree sapping to homemade bullet making. Wilder's autobiographical tales ring with truth and excitement. Readers will receive a perfectly painless history lesson, and in fact will clamor for more. Beloved illustrator Garth Williams spent years researching young Laura's pioneering family. His soft-line illustrations bring to life the full, simple days and nights in the family's log cabin. Description

Until the day his father returns to their cabin in the Maine wilderness, 12-year-old Matt must try to survive on his own. During an attack by swarming bees, Matt is astonished when he's rescued by an Indian chief and his grandson, Attean. As the boys come to know each other, many months pass without a sign of Matt's family. Then Attean asks Matt to join the Beaver tribe.

When his father returns East to collect the rest of the family, 13-year-old Matt is left alone to guard his family's newly built homestead. One day, Matt is brutally stung when he robs a bee tree for honey. He returns to consciousness to discover that his many stings have been treated by an old Native American and his grandson. Matt offers his only book as thanks, but the old man instead asks Matt to teach his grandson Attean to read. Both boys are suspicious, but Attean comes each day for his lesson. In the mornings, Matt tries to entice Attean with tales from Robinson Crusoe, while in the afternoons, Attean teaches Matt about wilderness survival and Native American culture. The boys become friends in spite of themselves, and their inevitable parting is a moving tribute to the ability of shared experience to overcome prejudice. The Sign of the Beaver was a Newbery Honor Book; author Elizabeth Speare has also won the Newbery Medal twice, for The Witch of Blackbird Pond and The Bronze Bow. (Ages 12 and older) --Richard Farr
